Ben Sanders English III M. Vining 2 March 2006 Lake City Needs a Skate Park Now There are 12.4 million skateboarders in the US (“Stats of Skate Boarders in America”). The fact that the skateboarding population is increasing may not be a surprise to many. Skateboarding has been around since the 1970’s when surfers took the axles off roller skates and bolted them to two-by-fours. In past times, it was only popular with surfers who could not surf at the time. As time went by more and more people started skateboarding in the late 70’s. Then, in the early and mid-80’s the skateboarding craze went way down and skate boarding was looked at as out of style. But skate boarding never completely died and in later years it grew and grew in to what it is today. Skate boarding , developed in the US, is now and international sport that many people from other countries engage in. From Austrailia to Europe skate boarding is alive and well. As the population of skate boarders and roller bladers increases the need for skate park increase dramatically. Lake City is one of those places that have an increasing population of skaters and even greater need for a skate park. There are many terms associated with skate parks and the act of skating that many people may not know. Skateboarding includes 50-55 millimeter polyurethane wheels bolted to metal axles, which are bolted to a wooden board. The wooden skateboard has an almost sandpaper-like sheet on top so a skateboarders feet will not slip off easily. The axles, or trucks, are made of a high quality metal and serve a multitude of purposes: holding the wheels, allowing the skateboarder to grind on benches or other obstacles. When a skateboarder grinds, it means that the board , and/ or trucks, is sliding on something while the skateboarder stands on the board. This skill takes many hours of practice and even more patience. Learning to skate board can be very frustrating but once a skateboarder lands a trick, they feel very self-accomplished and it only makes them want to go further and push harder. Some tricks that skateboarders may do are kickflips, heelflips, noseslides, tailslides and boardslides. A kickflip is where the skate boarder flicks the board with his toe and makes the board flip towards him/her, and land back on it after it flips. A heelflip is almost the same a kickflip but is involves flipping the board with the skate boarders heel instead of the toe, the board, in turn, flips away from the skateboarder, and the skateboarder lands back on it. A noseslide is a grind a skateboarder can do, I involves using the front(or nose) of the board to slide on the obslaacle. These are some terms to educate you on skateboarding and hopefully help you get a grasp of what skateboarding is all about. Because a small amount of skate boarders like to act like hoodlums and go around and do unlawful things, all of skateboarding has acquired that view from the American Society. When, in reality, most skateboarders are very well mannered and courteous people. If the public would give most skateboarders a chance to prove they are a good society, maybe we would have a skate park. A lot of people are hesitant on giving skaters a skate park for fear of the skaters defacing the skate park when, in reality, almost all skaters take pride in their skate parks. Most skaters go out of their way to keep their park clean and nice

Well its now 2:49 in the pm and i went to bed at 11:45 in the am hahah but somehow i have some energy, Well it turns out the guys arent goiing to atl, stupid hurricanes but anyway. The movies last night were so much fun . i broke the chain of like 9 days of not seeing leah so im not going crazy anymore at the moment. Um today i guess were going to skate or something which is cool . hopefully we film i really wanna.I hope tom dosent get mad that i left last night i dopnt think he will, hes been really cool lately so .im gonna babysit chris tomorrow and get like 20$ , and i dont know how but im gonna get a ridew to leahs for our one monther, anyway il write more later peace, iloveleah<33 peace
